Feeding South Dakota has released the “Map the Meal Gap 2016,” an annual study completed by Feeding America.
Feeding South Dakota Development Director, Kerri DeGraff, says the study details food insecurity rates on a county level for the entire country
DeGraff says food insecurity is defined as someone who lacks access to food on a regular basis
This year’s report found that nearly 15 percent, or about one in seven people in the United States struggles with hunger at some point during the year. DeGraff says compared to the entire country South Dakota is lower in hunger rates
The study also revealed the average cost of a meal increased 13 cents over last year’s data, and in eight counties of the state, more than 30 percent of the children are food insecure.
