When was the last time you really looked at your cell phone bill? Scott Mackey is the co-author of the Wireless Taxation in the United States 2014 Report and says Nebraskans will be very surprised.
Mackey says along with federal and state tax Nebraskans also pay into the State Universal Service Fund that is distributed to rural parts of the state. He says at the local level cities and counties can levy both a sales tax what is known as the Business and Occupation Tax, which is quite high.
About 24% of the total wireless phone bill in Nebraska is for taxes and fees. For those wanting to issue a complaint Mackey suggests you log on to mywireless.org. They list which elected official is responsible for different taxes charged to consumers.
