Manure Spill Was Accidental

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is investigating a manure spill that put at least 200 thousand gallons of liquid manure from a feedlot into David’s Creek about 10 miles west of Guthrie Center.  Karen Grimes with the DNR says the spill was an accident resulting from a broken pipe…

Matt Van Meter owns the feedlot, which has a 14 thousand head capacity.  Grimes says that since the spill was not reported within six hours of discovery, he may face receiving a notice of violation.  She says the DNR is still conducting studies on the impact the spill had on the stream…

Grimes says the feedlot has a permit for manure discharges during certain conditions.  It’s still under investigation as to whether the spill happened within those conditions or not.
