New federal education rules under the “Every Student Succeeds Act” could move states away from mandated testing.

Mary McCorkle, president of the South Dakota Education Association, says there will still be a need to measure how students are doing

McCorkle is taking part in the National Education Associations delegate assembly in Washington this week.

She says the testing will not be the only measure for students and their schools

McCorkle says it will help move back toward more local control

McCorkle says standards can now be developed with input from parents, teachers and the state Department of Education.
