Managing Feed During Drought

Managing feed supply during a drought was discussed by a South Dakota State University extension feedlot specialist during last week’s Dakota Farm Show.  Warren Rusche says cattle producers during these times of high feed costs and short supplies of hay are facing difficult challenges.  Rusche says the challenge facing cattle producers is being able to stretch their feed supply through the winter months.  Rusche shared some strategies to reduce feed loss.  Rusche also spoke about feed efficiency.  Rusche shared some research showing growth stimulant implants help cattle producers earn more money.  Rusche also discussed alternative feed sources such as feeding rye to cattle in place of corn.  Through his research, and seeing many variables, feeding rye may not be as efficient as feeding corn to fed cattle.
