Minnesota Lieutenant Governor Tina Smith is in Cuba this week trying to re-establish trade ties, following President Trump’s policy rollback. State Farmers Union President Gary Wertish says even though trade has been stifled by the change, having a chance to rekindle relationships is important should future steps be taken to normalize trade with Cuba.
President Trump’s change in policy tightens financial and travel restrictions. Wertish says while this is a challenge, it can be overcome and says that’s why this visit by Minnesota’s Lieutenant Governor is important.
Wertish says his group will work with Congress to reverse the administration’s Cuban policy and get ag trade moving to the island nation.
The Minnesota Lieutenant Governor and her delegation arrived in Cuba on Tuesday and will be there for five days.
