Minnesota Land Stewardship Project members want state lawmakers to approve a pair of bills to help producers achieve soil health goals. LSP Policy Program Organizer Amanda Koehler says two measures in the House contained important soil health provisions while the Senate did not. She says they want the conference committee to include those provisions in a final bill and pass it.
She says the soil health legislation originated with several Land Stewardship Project farmer members with the goal to have 30 percent of Minnesota’s farmland utilizing soil health practices by 2030.
Koehler says her group met with the State Ag Commissioner and the director of the Board of Water and Resources and told them farmers need financial assistance in order to achieve soil health goals.
Koehler believes the soil health bills provides Minnesota an opportunity to become a national leader in building soil health on farmland.
