Friday, Minnesota Congressman Rick Nolan introduced the Crop Insurance Modernization Act of 2018. The idea for the legislation was suggested last February by Minnesota Land Stewardship Project members. LSP Policy Program Organizer Ben Anderson says the legislation strengthens the crop insurance program by tying it more closely to conservation.
He says it also expands access to insurance premium discounts for beginning farmers. Anderson says the bill also fixes a loophole that currently allows farmers to transfer historical yield data to lower quality land.
Anderson says Nolan’s measure will save the government money and make crop insurance more effective.
Anderson says the legislation strengthens conservation compliance checks conducted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
