House Agriculture Committee Chairman Mike Conaway is moving ahead this month with work on the new farm bill. Minnesota Land Stewardship Project Policy Organizer Ben Anderson is pleased lawmakers are pushing forward with that. He says LSP has several priorities for the new legislation including solid funding for conservation as well as a good risk management program and funding help for beginning farmers and ranchers.
He says the main challenge for lawmakers will be to put together a solid farm bill that helps producers struggling with a down farm economy and funding the right measures to help them.
Anderson says LSP wants a solid risk management program but some changes need to be made to it so those that need the assistance the most from it receive it.
Anderson says while it would be good to have the farm bill done soon, he is hoping lawmakers don’t rush with the legislation.
