This week is the one year anniversary of the Derecho Storm which devastated a widespread area of Iowa. The storm ripped up grain bins, uprooted trees, stripped fields and caused a lot of damage. Iowa Corn Grower’s Association Jim Greif lives near Cedar Rapids where the Derecho did a lot of damage. He says the recovery process is going pretty slow with several grain bins yet to be rebuilt.
He says corn was badly damaged last year and that led to some problems this year with volunteer corn.
Greif says some of the pandemic aid helped producers somewhat but crop insurance was a big part of any relief farmers saw.
Greif says in the city of Cedar Rapids alone, 700,000 trees were damaged from the Derecho.
