Longtime S.D. Coach Dies

A longtime basketball coach in the state of South Dakota has passed away at the age of 78.

Doug Martin’s 31-year career in South Dakota including head coaching stints at Mount Marty, the University of South Dakota and Dakota Wesleyan. His overall record was 371-418.

Martin spent the majority of his career at Dakota Wesleyan, where he coached from 1988 to 2005. He compiled a 252-256 record and won four conference titles with the Tigers. He was inducted into the South Dakota Sports Hall of Fame in 2011.

Martin was the head coach at Mount Marty from 1978-82 and at USD from 1982-86.

USD officials say Martin died Sunday in his hometown of La Crosse, Wisconsin.
