Governor Dennis Daugaard’s proposal for a slim increase in education funding could create more costs for property tax owners. The shift from the state education programs to property taxes were initially figured at $ 2.6 million. However in the second year and subsequent years, the cost to property taxpayers goes to $ 5 million per year. That concerns South Dakota Farm Bureau members and their lobbyist Mike Held.
Held says he wants to know more of what the Governor is looking at for education funding.
The per student allocation for the current school year is $4,781. Governor Daugaard has outlined a 2 percent education funding proposal that would raise per student allocation to $ 4,877. It had been $ 4,805 prior to cuts made in 2011 by the Governor and legislature.
