Livestock producers are advised to have grain tested prior to feeding it with the increase in wet and low quality corn in 2019. SDSU Extension Swine Specialist Dr. Bob Thaler says light test weight corn or grain with mold or mycotoxins can negatively impact performance and gain. He recommends producers take multiple sample to have tested.
He says the two primary mycotoxins producers in the region have to deal with are zeralaknown and vomatoxin.
Thaler says if hogs ingest grain with vomotoxin, they’ll vomit it up and won’t eat the feed which will decrease gain. He recommends segregating the corn that is being fed.
Thaler says if the test weight on the corn is 45 pounds or above pigs won’t see much change in gain, but below that level it can hurt feed efficiency.
