One of the challenges from this spring’s flooding in Nebraska is replenishing hay supplies. University of Nebraska Lincoln Extension Forage Crop Residue Specialist Daren Redfearn says one of the short-term solutions is donated hay that’s come into the state.

He says some of the options producers can look at for forage replacement are cool season small grains.

Redfearn advises producers not to graze the perennial pastures too soon, and instead allow them to dry out before turning out livestock.

Redfearn says now that flood waters are receding another problem is some pastures have picked large amounts of sand deposits in Nebraska and silt in Iowa.
