Livestock odor reduction techniques focusing on biofilters and shelter belts will be discussed at a meeting tonight in Tyndall, South Dakota. Retired SDSU Ag Engineer Dr. Richard Nicolai will speak at the meeting. He says pork producers trying to address odor concerns should consider biofilters and shelterbelts because using setbacks as a buffer is becoming more difficult to do.
He says using shelter belts for odor reduction is a long term solution, but if biofilters are designed and properly maintained they can also be very effective.
Nicolai says proper maintenance of biofilters is important and using some type of irrigation system is recommended.
Nicolai says University studies have shown that biofilters when properly designed and maintained reduce the spread of disease, odor and particulates between 80 and 95-percent. Tonight’s meeting gets underway at 6:30 at the Tyndall Community Room.
