Monday, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration issued a 90-day waiver for compliance with the Electronic Logging Device rule. That regulation, set to go into effect December 18, would be burdensome for livestock haulers. South Dakota Pork Producers Council Executive Director Glenn Muller is pleased federal regulators heard the concerns of livestock haulers and are giving them time to adjust.
He says the waiver not only allows time to come into compliance, it gives the ag industry a chance to weigh in with the feds on the need to reexamine the regulation.
Muller says had the waiver not been allowed it could have negatively impacted animal welfare, which is a major concern forthe pork industry.
The 90-day waiver runs from December 18, 2017 to April 1, 2018.
