Thursday, Robert Lighthizer was confirmed by the Senate as U.S. Trade Representative. Nebraska Farm Bureau National Affairs Coordinator Jordan Dux says they’re pleased Lighthizer has been confirmed and hopes he’ll defend U.S. agriculture in all trade discussions. President Steve Nelson sent a letter to Lighthizer asking him not to sacrifice gains achieved in agricultural trade for the benefit of other industries.
He says Lighthizer’s first priority should be maintaining the gains U.S. agriculture has made with NAFTA as that deal is renegotiated.
Nebraska Pork Producers Association President Russ Vering has concerns about Lighthizer and is also hoping he’ll support America’s farmers and ranchers.
Dux says Lighthizer needs to work closely with the new USDA undersecretary for trade to help grow and expand markets for U.S. farmers and ranchers. He says the reorganization of USDA announced Thursday by Ag Secretary Sonny Perdue is a positive step for agriculture.
