University of South Dakota head men’s basketball coach Craig Smith has announced that Tyler Borchers, a 6-foot-6 forward from LeMars High School in LeMars, Iowa, has committed to play basketball for the Coyotes.

Borchers averaged 18.4 points, 10.2 rebounds and 4.7 assists in leading the Bulldogs to a 22-5 record and a runner-up finish at the state basketball tournament in Des Moines this past March. Borchers was the Class 3A All-Tournament Team Captain. He was a first-team all-state performer according to many media outlets throughout Iowa.

“Tyler is a great addition to our program,” said Smith. “He was an outstanding three-sport athlete at LeMars. He is athletic, tough and plays the game with a tremendous competitive spirit. We are excited about the type of player he can develop into as a member of our team.”

Borchers was a three-time all-Lakes Conference honoree for LeMars head coach Dave Irwin. He averaged 8.8 points and 8.2 rebounds as a sophomore and 18.9 points and 8.0 boards as a junior.

Borchers also competed in football and track and field for the Bulldogs. He twice earned all-district honors on the gridiron, and was a state qualifier in the discus in 2014.

Borchers maintains a 3.90 grade point average and is a member of the National Honor Society. He has earned academic awards in both basketball and football.
