South Dakota lawmakers are back in Pierre today after a four day break for Presidents Day. There are now four weeks left in the main run of this year’s session.

Major issues including transportation and education funding and Medicaid are still waiting for action.

Senator Bill Van Gerpen of Tyndall, a member of the Appropriations Committee, says the transportation funding bill may see more amendments before final passage…

The Governor has proposed about fifty million dollars in tax and fee increases to fund road and bridge construction.

Van Gerpen says he would like to see more of the money going to counties…

While the Governor has proposed a two percent increase in education funding, he also is setting up a task force to study long term funding.

Van Gerpen says despite that, he thinks legislators will look to find extra money for schools…

The main run of the session ends on March 13th, with the final day set for March 30th.
