South Dakota Governor Dennis Daugaard has proposed raising fees and taxes to provide about fifty point five million dollars for road and bridge work.
About thirty nine million would go for state roads, with about ten point seven million for county and local projects.
It would come from increases in the gas tax, registration fees and excise taxes on vehicles.
Democratic Representative Julie Bartling of Gregory says the Governors plans is a start.

Bartling says the tax and fee increases will not be popular.

Republican Representative Jean Hunhoff of Yankton was a member of the summer study committee that made recommendations on transportation funding. She says it’s good to get the Governors support of at least part of it.

Hunhoff says there is a need for more dollars for roads.
