Coalition for a Prosperous America leaders support legislation that would direct the Commerce Department to treat currency manipulation as an export subsidy. Former House Ways and Means Committee ranking member Sander Levin has sent a letter to the Trump Administration asking for that designation. The Coalition’s CEO Michael Stumo says this idea makes sense.
He says if currency manipulation is determined to be an export subsidy, then the U.S. would be able to place countervailing duties on countries that manipulate their currencies and are getting an unfair trade advantage.
Stumo says if the Trump administration backs the legislation it will likely pass.
Stumo says it’s important to have the change passed in legislation because if it’s done by executive order the next President could reverse the measure.
