It may surprise you, but heart disease is the leading cause of death among women. That’s one of the messages the American Heart Association is sharing during February Heart Month according to Communications Director, Chrissy Meyer.

It’s also an opportunity to educate the public on how to live a heart-healthy lifestyle and eat smarter. Sanford cardiologist Dr. Tom Stys says there is release positive research findings about lean beef’s role in cardiovascular health.

That research has been spearheaded by the South Dakota Beef Industry Council and Director of Nutrition and Consumer Information Holly Swee says more than 60-percent of all whole muscle cuts are lean.

She says these cuts can also be recognized in the store by looking for the word loin or round in the name or the American Heart Association’s heart check mark label.
