A group of bipartisan Senators led by John Thune of South Dakota and Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota are asking Ag Secretary Sonny Perdue to prioritize implementation of the SAFE program. That’s the State Acres for Wildlife Enhancement initiative within the Conservation Reserve Program. South Dakota Corn Growers Director of Sustainability Jim Ristau says that gives growers an option to deal with wet soils and salinity issues.

He says that initiative is positive for improving soil health as well as protecting wildlife, both of which are important to the region.

Ristau says there other benefits with the SAFE program, which is a much different CRP program than producers have dealt with in the past.

The Senators say that land enrolled in SAFE serves as an example ow how the USDA, landowners, and other partners can work together to address all resource concerns on the same acre of enrolled land.
