The most recent round of NAFTA or North American Free Trade Agreement renegotiation talks saw progress on agricultural issues. Farm Bureau Economist Veronica Nigh says while meeting in Mexico City, negotiators wrapped up discussions regarding sanitary and phytosanitary measures.
She says the NAFTA chapter on technical barriers to trade including items such as labeling, is close to being finished. However, Nigh says there is much work yet to be done regarding market access.
Previously negotiators planned to conclude talks by the end of this month. However, another round of discussions is scheduled in April, and Nigh says she doesn’t expect NAFTA to be finished this year.
