Nebraska’s largest natural gas providers are getting ready to give customers some leeway this winter.

The Public Service Commission’s “Cold Weather Rule” kicks Tuesday and runs through March.

Communications manager Deb Collins says it gives customers an additional 30 days to pay a bill before getting shut off.

Collins says the rule only applies to gas companies that the Public Service Commission has jurisdiction over.

It does not apply to gas utilities operated by a local government.

Collins says there are ways to reduce heating costs.

Local public assistance agencies might help with natural gas bills, but Collins says contact the gas company first.
