South Dakota landowners who want to get a tax break by participating in the state’s buffer strip incentive program have until October 15 to submit their applications. Those must go the county equalization director in the county where their property is located. SDSU Extension Water Resources Field Specialist David Kringen says the vegetative buffer must be a minimum of 50 feet in width up to a maximum of 120 feet and can ‘t be harvested or mowed before July 10.
The existing or newly planted vegetation will be assessed at 60 percent of the land’s agricultural income value. Kringen says the perennial vegetation will improve water quality.

Under the Buffer Strip incentive program, grazing is prohibited from May 1 through September 30 and a 4 inch minimum must be maintained at all times.
