A South Dakota legislative committee will meet again next week in hopes of writing a bill that could open a number of lakes to fishing again.
The Game, Fish and Parks Department closed public access to about twenty-five lakes after the state Supreme Court ruled that neither sportsmen or landowners had superior rights to land that had been flooded in the past twenty years.
Committee Chairman, Representative Lee Qualm of Platte, says much of what they heard at their last meeting had to do with respecting the landowners…..
Qualm says some bad actors caused most of the problems in and near private land under those lakes….
Qualm says he would like to see a special session of the legislature in June to pass bills that could re-open those waters.
The Regulation of Non Meandered Waters Committee will meet next Wednesday (May 24) in Pierre.
