The prices that farmers are receiving for commodities this year are much lower than recent history, and that is having an effect on the area’s land prices. An auction sale of about 125 acres in Yankton County this week brought $6700 dollars per acre, but according to Kevin Wieman, auctioneer for Wieman Land and Auction, the urgency to buy land isn’t there.
That reduction Wieman refers to is in the prices paid for land in the area, but he says that the number of parcels up for sale is declining as well.
He says that although recent sales in McCook County have broken record highs with the prices paid for ag land, that isn’t the normal as many sales are slowing down with less enthusiasm to buy.
Wieman attributes the fall in ag land prices directly to the decline seen in commodity prices.
