Key United States ag trading partners retaliated quickly last week to the Trump Administration’s latest steel and aluminum tariffs. Mexico says it will levy import taxes on U.S. pork bellies, apples, cranberries, grapes and some cheese and some types of steel. Canada slapped a surtax on American steel, aluminum, coffee, candy, pizza and even quiche.
Former USDA trade advisor Paul Drazek disputes the President’s claim that imported steel from Canada or others is a national security threat.
Some of President Trump’s advisors agree with the President that it’s time to stand up against unfair foreign tariffs and trading practices. Others argue against tariffs, as do key lawmakers in both parties. Drazek says Trump is getting some good advice but is taking advice for those who want to punish our trading partners.
The European Union has its own list of products it’s retaliating against and it also has taken its case to the World Trade Organization.
