The Wheat Quality Council’s winter wheat crop tour wrapped up in Kansas on Thursday afternoon. Council Executive Vice President Dave Green says their estimated yield projected for this year’s crop of 243.3 million bushels is down significantly from last year. In fact, it’s 90 million bushels less and the lowest since 1989.
He says cool and dry weather impacted this year’s wheat along with the development being late.
Green says there is a possibility good drying weather going forward would help the crop as it nears harvest.
Green says a pair of farmers on the tour described the situation very well when they said there’s about 90 days of growing left but only 60 days until harvest. He says that means the crop will have to hurry along.
