The U.S. Justice Department has approved the sale of Cargill’s Pork Unit to JBS. The National Farmers Union is opposed to the decision. Senior Vice President of Programs, Chandler Goule says the acquisition will hurt small and medium sized pork producers leaving the marketplace controlled by an even smaller handful of companies.

Goule says the Justice Department failed to require any divestiture by JBS SA and didn’t look at any real antitrust problems with the purchase.

He says there are a number of other concerns tied to foreign companies owning U.S. businesses.

Goule says the JBS SA purchase will have a direct negative impact on pork prices for consumers and will further concentrate ownership of pork processing with four companies controlling 70-percent of the market.
