RECOVERY SEARCH FOR MISSING WOMAN ON MISSOURI RIVER WILL RESUME MONDAY MORNING

SOUTH SIOUX CITY, NE (KTIV) – A search on the Missouri River for a missing woman on Sunday will resume at 8:30 am Monday.

According to the South Sioux City Fire Department, at approximately 5:33 PM Sunday June 29, 2025, the South Sioux City Fire Department responded to a water emergency involving an adult female, approximately 23 years old, who was swept away by the current in the Missouri River. Witnesses say the individual was about 10 feet from shore when she was pulled under the water and did not resurface.

SSCFD personnel, along with law enforcement from South Sioux City Police Department and the Dakota County Sheriff’s Office, responded immediately and began preparations for a shore-based rescue. Mutual aid was requested from Sioux City Fire Rescue’s Technical Rescue Team, which arrived with watercraft equipped for sonar-based search operations. As the response developed, SSCFD crews conducted shoreline reconnaissance downstream and launched a drone to assist with aerial observation.

Sioux City Fire Rescue began sonar sweeps on the water, while the Dakota City Fire Department entered the river downstream and worked their way upstream toward the last known location. The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission also joined the effort with a boat equipped with specialized sonar technology.

Approximately one hour into the operation, the situation transitioned from a rescue to a recovery mission. Around three hours in, sonar detected a possible object approximately 100 yards from the point where the individual was last seen. The Sioux City Fire Rescue Dive Team conducted a targeted search in the area but was unable to locate the individual. The Dakota County and Woodbury County Offices of Emergency Management were also called in to support the multi-agency response. Due to limited visibility and safety concerns, recovery operations were suspended at nightfall. The search is scheduled to resume at approximately 8:30 AM tomorrow.

NEBRASKA’S HEAD OF DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT TO RESIGN

LINCOLN, NE (WOWT) – Nebraska’s director of the Department of Economic Development, K.C. Belitz, is set to resign in July, Gov. Jim Pillen said Tuesday.

A statement from Gov. Pillen’s office said Belitz will resign from his position effective July 18.

Pillen’s office said Belitz oversaw the development of projects like Read Nebraska, 6 Regions, One Nebraska, and the Governor’s New Venture Competition.

Belitz also oversaw the review and issuance of hundreds of millions of dollars in grants through state and local programs, especially in North and South Omaha.

An announcement for the interim director of the DED and the search for a permanent director will come at a later date, Pillen’s office said.

“K.C. is a committed public servant, whose entire career has been about growing local communities and growing Nebraska. Over the past two years, he has been a positive champion for bringing new business to the state and fostering relationships that will allow Nebraska to continue attracting companies involved in the bioeconomy, manufacturing, technology and other industries. I appreciate all that K.C. has done as director of DED and wish him the very best in all future endeavors.”

  • Jim Pillen

“It has been a pleasure to serve Gov. Pillen and the people of Nebraska in this role. It has afforded me the chance to meet stakeholders across Nebraska who care deeply about their communities, making investments and creating opportunities so that families can raise their kids, have great careers, and thrive in their home state. That has been immensely satisfying, and I’m appreciative of those many relationships.”
