South Dakota Republican Congressman Dusty Johnson has introduced a bill to help prevent our enemies from purchasing agricultural companies, farmland, or other agricultural interests until the U-S Department of Agriculture would review the transaction. Known as the Promoting Agriculture Safeguards and Security Act, PASS Act, Johnson says it is meant to protect U-S agricultural interests and review any foreign acquisition of American companies that may affect our agriculture sector. Johnson says by design, China, Russia, and other nations have acquired U-S farmland, along with agricultural companies, and other agriculture interests. The South Dakota lawmaker says there is already a government entity that reviews foreign ownership of U-S companies. Johnson says unfortunately it doesn’t include agricultural interests. So far, only Republican members of Congress have signed on to the bill, but Johnson says he is hopeful the bill will garner bi-partisan support.
