The lower house of the Japanese Parliament will take up the full trade deal with the United States on Friday, with the full body voting next week. South Dakota Cattlemen’s Association President Steve Ollerich says having the tariffs on U.S. beef lowered and brought in line with CPTPP countries levels the playing field for U.S. cattle producers.
He says once on equal ground, the U.S has an immediate advantage because of the quality of the beef and the preference by Japanese consumers.
Ollerich says once the full agreement is ratified by Japan, it will benefit all U.S. ag products.
The first phase of the U.S. Japan bilateral deal was signed in late September.
