The nationally ranked South Dakota State University football team opens the home portion of its season Saturday night by hosting former conference rival Southern Utah in the Second Annual Dairy Drive game.
Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at Coughlin-Alumni Stadium. The game can be heard on 570 WNAX and across the Jackrabbit Sports Network.
The Jackrabbit football team will conduct a free youth clinic from 1:30 until 3 p.m. Saturday on the practice fields adjacent to the stadium.
The Jackrabbits are coming off their first-ever win over a Football Bowl Subdivision opponent in the Division I era after holding on for a 41-38 victory at Kansas on Sept. 5. SDSU led 31-7 in the second quarter and held off a Jayhawk comeback attempt.
Southern Utah, meanwhile, is 0-1 after dropping a 12-9 game at in-state rival Utah State on Sept. 3. The Thunderbirds led most of the game until Utah State returned a punt 88 yards for a touchdown with less than five minutes to play.
The Thunderbirds, who are receiving votes in this week’s STATS media poll, feature one of the top defensive players in the Football Championship Subdivision in defensive lineman James Cowser. A finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award in 2014, Cowser registered 29 tackles for loss, including 11.5 sacks, a season ago.
