A football rivalry is renewed in Brookings Saturday.
The South Dakota State University football team will attempt to make one final push toward a potential third consecutive berth in the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs Saturday, when it hosts in-state rival University of South Dakota.
Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Coughlin-Alumni Stadium. The Jackrabbits’ 16 seniors will be honored prior to the game.
Television coverage on Midco Sports Network begins at 1 p.m. with an hour-long pre-game show.
Saturday’s game is part of the South Dakota Showdown Series, which is presented by South Dakota Corn. The winner of Saturday’s game will earn two points in the year-long, all-sport competition between the state’s two largest institutions.
The Jackrabbits, ranked 15th this week by the FCS coaches and 16th in the Sports Network media poll, enter play today with a 7-4 overall record and 4-3 mark in the Missouri Valley Football Conference. SDSU has posted back-to-back convincing wins, racking up more than 500 yards in consecutive victories over Indiana State (32-17) and Western Illinois (59-24). The Jackrabbits’ 59 points last week against WIU were the most scored against an MVFC opponent since joining the league in 2008.
USD, meanwhile, is in search of its first league victory of the season. The Coyotes, 2-9 overall, dropped a 45-26 decision to MVFC co-leader Illinois State last week in their home finale.
THE SERIES: Saturday’s game marks the 107th meeting between South Dakota and South Dakota State in a series that dates back to 1889. The first meeting between the two programs ended in a 6-6 tie, and the series is tied with a 50-50-6 count.
The Jackrabbits drew even in the series with a 27-12 victory last season at the DakotaDome in Vermillion.
SDSU has won the last five meetings, dating back to 2001. The two programs did not meet between 2004 and 2011 as SDSU and USD staggered their entry into Division I athletics.
