For the second-straight season, the South Dakota State University women’s tennis team finished second at The Summit League Women’s Tennis Championships at the Miracle Hill Golf and Tennis Center.
No. 44 Denver defeated the Jackrabbits, 4-0, Saturday afternoon to repeat as the league champions.
“Hats off to Denver today. We came out strong and ready to play and they were able to weather the storm. Once they got the ball rolling, they were tough to stop and really earned the win,” sixth-year head coach Michael Engdahl said.
Denver picked up the doubles point by winning at No. 2 and No. 3. SDSU’s No. 1 team, junior Iasmin Rosa and senior Ffion Davies, led 5-3 when its match was called.
The Pioneers recorded wins at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 6 to win the championship.
“I don’t even know where to begin with this senior class. They are the group who really put Jackrabbits tennis on the map. They have been a coach’s dream to work with and be around,” Engdahl said. “I couldn’t have asked for better players and people to wear the blue and yellow over the last four years. They have so much to be proud of and can look back on a record-breaking run throughout their careers. Not very many people can say that and they should look back on what they accomplished with no regrets and nothing but great memories.”
The Jackrabbits finish the season with a 16-10 dual record.
