South Dakota State University baseball coach Dave Schrage announced Tuesday that he has stepped down to accept the head coaching position at Butler University in Indianapolis.

“I thoroughly enjoyed my time at SDSU and appreciate the opportunity provided by (SDSU Director of Athletics) Justin Sell,” Schrage said. “(My wife) Kay and I have loved being a part of the Brookings community, but this decision allows us to be closer our children, with all three living in Indiana. This program is in great hands and it will continue to move forward.”

Schrage led the Jackrabbit baseball program for five seasons, compiling a 136-144-1 overall record, including a 65-65 mark in Summit League play. SDSU qualified for the Summit League tournament each of his last four seasons, including winning the league postseason championship and making the program’s first NCAA Tournament at the Division I level in 2013. His 136 wins at SDSU rank third in program history.

By moving on to Butler, Schrage will coach his third Division I baseball program in the state of Indiana. He was head coach at Evansville from 2003-06 and led the Purple Aces to the finals of the NCAA Charlottesville Regional in 2006. The Chicago native later served as head coach at Notre Dame from 2007-10.

In 28 seasons as a collegiate head coach, Schrage has recorded a 732-806-2 overall mark. Schrage also has been head coach at Waldorf (Iowa), Northern Iowa and Northern Illinois.
