Junior Grant Smith is tied for first and the South Dakota State men’s golf team is sixth Monday after the opening of the 2016 NCAA Kohler Regional.
The Jackrabbits shot a two-over par 290 on the par 72, 7,123-yard Meadow Valley course at Blackwolf Run. No. 16 Florida leads the 13-team field after firing a 283. SDSU trails Idaho (283), No. 10 Florida State (284), No. 45 Kent State (288) and No. 4 Illinois (289).
Smith is tied with 18-ranked Hank Lebioda of Florida State, Daniel Sutton and Ryan Porch of Idaho. The Johnston, Iowa native fired a two-under 69 with three birdies on the front nine and collected an eagle for one under on the back nine. Monday’s scored was Smith’s third round under 70 this season and the fourth of his career.
Freshman Alejandro Perazzo (Caracas, Venezuela) just missed the top 10, tying for 11th with a one-under par 71. He collected three birdies.
Rookie Felipe Strobach (Lima, Peru) is tied for 41st after shooting a two-over par 74 with three birdies on the back nine.
Junior Trevor Tobin (Brandon) and freshman Jaxon Lynn (Sylvan Lake, Alberta) are both tied for 62nd. Tobin shot a four-over par 76 with a pair of birdies and Lynn had a 76 with four birdies.
The Jackrabbits return to action Tuesday for the second round of the NCAA Regional Tournament.
