Many growers are or will be storing soybeans this harvest season with the current low prices and the trade war impacts. Iowa State University Extension Ag Engineer Kris Kohl says the most important thing farmers can do to make sure the crop stays in good condition is to cool down the bin and make sure the moisture level isn’t too high when harvesting the beans.
He says sometimes he recommends drying the soybeans using natural air.
Kohl says extra precautions need to be taken when drying soybeans as they can catch fire easily and that fire can spread quickly.
Kohl says in instances where soybeans were taken to a commercial elevator to be dried in a corn dryer the results were not always favorable as the soybeans can end up getting burnt.
