ISU Receives Grant to Research PEDv Immunity

Zoetis has awarded a research grant to Iowa State University to find solutions to help improve control of Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus in breeding and farrowing herds. ISU Swine Extension Veterinarian Chris Rademacher says the goal is to determine if PEDV immunity can be predicted and measured and if it improves productivity in a chronically affected breeding herd. He says they’re working with one of the two vaccines recently developed to battle the disease in their research.

He says pork producers have done a great job with biosecurity on their operations to deal with the disease which has resulted in less cases this winter.

Rademacher says the $ 60,000 grant should help them gain some answers that will help producers in the long run.

Iowa State University was one of eight finalists chosen by Zoetis for the grant and the project is expected to be completed this year.
