The cool and wet spring weather has put planting behind in much of the Northern Plains. Iowa State University Extension Field Agronomist Joel DeJong expects farmers to get going rapidly when given the right planting window. He advises grower however not to rush and to be safe when out in the fields.
He says if the weather cooperates northwest Iowa farmers should reach their planting goals of having most of the corn in the ground and soybeans at least started by May 9.
DeJong says to not get overtired and rush through planting but to be alert because accidents can happen very quickly on the farm .
DeJong adds that those out on the roads need to watch out for that slower moving farm equipment and slow down and keep an eye out for those farmers busy with planting chores.
