Fires in livestock facilities are a major challenging with the recent cold snap. Iowa State University Extension Ag Engineer and Swine Housing Specialist Jay Harmon says some fires pop up when barns are left empty and the ventilation is shut off.
He says some fire prevention steps can be taken when it’s cold, such as keeping furnaces in proper operating condition.
Harmon says it’s critical to ensure there are safety exits in the barn.
Harmon says it’s also a good idea to have fire extinguishers available, quick access to water and keep the phone number of the local fire department handy.
