European Union trade officials have been balking at allowing agriculture to be a part of trade talks with the United States. Iowa Soybean Association President Lindsay Greiner says it’s critical agriculture be a part of those discussions as it’s in both the interests of the U.S. and E.U. that they are included. He’s also hoping that talks will lead to elimination of any tariff and non-tariff trade barriers.
He’d also like to see objections by the European Union to ag biotechnology overcome in the upcoming trade discussions although that’s likely a heavy lift.
Greiner wants the USTR to accelerate the trade talks and push for getting an agreement done that benefits agriculture.
Members of Congress aren’t likely to accept a trade deal with the E.U. without agriculture as part of the final package.
