Iowa Soybean Association members were hoping state lawmakers would have approved legislation calling for a watershed approach to improving the state’s water quality. ISA Policy Director Carol Balvanz says they didn’t oppose SF 512 which passed the Senate Tuesday. She says the measure is at least an initial step in enhancing Iowa’s water quality.
She says the watershed approach involves farmers, city residents and stakeholders working together for better water quality. Balvanz says it also involves a more targeted approach to getting the most of the funding provided.
Balvanz says the watershed approach allows water quality projects to be strategically located whether it be wetlands, bioreactors or control drain structures. She was hoping state legislators would target the funding better than what was passed in SF 512.
SF 512 earlier passed the Iowa House and now goes to the Governor.
