Texas Senator Ted Cruz ramped up his attacks on the renewable fuel standard with a rally in Pennsylvania this week at the bankrupt Pennsylvania Energy Solutions refinery. He blamed the RFS and RINS credits for causing that operation to go belly up. Iowa Renewable Fuels Association Executive Director Monte Shaw says part of the reason he’s making those charges is because he’s in a tight race for re-election.
He says to blame the renewable identification numbers or RINS credits for the bankruptcy doesn’t match up with what most experts said are the cause of that PES facility going out of business.
Shaw says Cruz is ignoring the fact that most oil and gas refineries are not only making money but some are seeing record profits.
Shaw says it’s also ridiculous that Cruz keeps holding up the nomination of Iowa Ag Secretary Bill Northey to an undersecretary’s position at the USDA over his support for the RFS when that standard is working.
