Iowa farmers and government officials are assessing the cost of agricultural-related damage from Tuesday’s derecho storm. Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig says its too early to determine total crop losses, but they are estimating nearly a third of the state was impacted.
Naig says there was structural damage to farm property. Plus, many grain storage facilities were lost and it will be difficult get those structures replaced or repaired before harvest.
The derecho packed straight line winds of up to 106 miles per hour and held together for 14 hours, covering 770 miles. Naig says In Iowa the path was 40 miles wide and 400 miles long stretching from Sioux City to the Quad Cities.
The storm created power outages that shut down some operations at processing facilities, but that impact is also difficult to estimate.
