The Iowa Department of Natural Resources released their list of state polluted waterways. Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement’s farm and environment organizer Jess Mazour says the number of impaired waters went up 15 percent from a year earlier.
Mazour says ICCI wants the state DNR to crack down more heavily on the polluters. She also says this DNR report proves that the state’s nutrient reduction management strategy is failing.
The Iowa DNR will hold a public comment period on their draft impaired waterways list from May 19 to July 2. That report will remain a draft until the EPA reviews, edits and approves the report.
