Iowa State Economist Says Global Competition Pushing Mega Ag Mergers

Iowa State Economist Says Global Competition Pushing Mega Ag Mergers

One of the possible ag mergers being talked about involves Archer Daniels Midland taking over Bunge. Iowa State University Extension Economist Chad Hart says he doesn’t see much of an impact from such a merger on farmers in the Northern Plains but more of a global effect.

He says should the ADM Bunge merger happen, then the companies feel they would have a stronger impact on world markets.

Hart says the reason many of the large ag mergers have taken place is companies trying to be more competitive globally.

Hart says as far as market power going to a particular company, he sees more concern over the Dow-DuPont and Bayer-Monsanto mergers than with a possible deal between ADM and Bunge.
