The Senate Health Committee has advanced the nomination of Stephen Hahn as FDA commissioner to the full Senate for a confirmation vote. Hahn’s comments to the committee indicated his wish for clear, transparent labeling for the use of dairy terms in the marketplace. Iowa State Dairy Association Executive Director Mitch Schulte shares those views and is hoping if Hahn’s confirmed he’ll enforce labeling laws.
He says truthful and transparent labels are needed for all food products, not just dairy.
Schulte says it’s critical consumers aren’t confused when they purchase their products and the FDA and its leadership needs to help ensure that.
Both the Iowa State Dairy Association and the National Milk Producers Federation say current FDA standards make it clear that dairy terms are reserved for real dairy product, not plant based imitators.
